Ex Works (EXW) and Delivered at Place (DAP) are merchandising and shipping terms used in international trade. Ex Works (EXW) is a contract between the buyer and the seller, wherein the seller disposes of the finished goods at their outlet premises, warehouse or factory from where the buyer has to collect the goods. The seller has no obligation or any binding contractual agreement of loading, customs clearing, container booking, cargo insurance, etc. It is also called FOB (Free on Board), and the price would be for only the value of the goods for delivery.

Delivered at Place (DAP) is a delivery system where the seller commits to delivering the goods at the buyer’s destination and is obligated to transport them. The seller must clear all customs and legal formalities (both in the origin country of export and in the importing country if it’s an international consignment). The seller is also required to pay applicable duties and taxes, arrange shipping lines, cargo insurance etc. This comes with higher costs because of additional logistic services involved in the contract.

Incoterms are a set of stipulated international trade practices and guidelines that entangle the buyer and the seller on the logistic side of a trade agreement. There are 11 sets of internationally accepted regulations that govern the responsibilities between the buyer and the seller on the logistic exercise. The major areas of responsibility and obligations are for delivery location, transportation costs, customs, other mandatory legal clearances and the most important, insurance coverage. The framework and guidelines of incoterms are being set by ICC (International Chamber of Commerce).
